We are lighting a unity candle outside, and plan on buying globes for candles. The wedding will be on the mountains in June, so it will be windy I am sure. What is the proper way to light them? When do the mothers light them and when will we light our candle?

Please get the special candles for outdoor weddings. My brother and sister in law did and that is the only reason those things didn't blow out when the wind picked up. The mothers lit candles during the ceremony and then they lit their candle together from those candles.

We decided to play a song during the unity candle ceremony - so we had the mothers come and light theirs at that time. However, I've also seen them light theirs at the beginning before they sit down. Since you're outside - I'd go with the first option, but it's your wedding so whatever you want.

You can use a lighter or candle lighter to light them - then use the single candles to light the unity candle.

Sounds like it'll be a beautiful ceremony - best of luck!!

Im not sure how set you are on candles for your unity ceremony... but for outdoor ceremonies I have found that a BEAUTIFUL alternative to candles is sand. You each pour in a different color of sand into a decorative (sealable) glass jar and it shows how your lives are now as intermeshed as the sand (which as you know it would be hard to seperate the sand colors fully once poured together). Then you also get the added benefit of the completed project which can be placed somewhere in your home as a reminder of your love and wedding day.

We kept it out of our wedding, but we were going to have each of our mothers light their candle when they walk up and we would light them during the ceremony. Globes are going to be beautiful......
