Annexation of Hawaii by one of the world powers was imminent at the end of the 19th century. Example: The Hawaiian flag was commissoned by the royals with elements of the British Union Flag and the American colors & stripes to appeal to both nations. If not by Americans, it would have been annexed by Japan, Russia or Britain. Next in line were the French or Germans. Just look at the colonial powers of all other Pacific islands. The population of Hawaii was already down to 1/3 of the original population, because most natives had died of western diseases. The best chance to have their kids survive with an adapted immune system was to interbreed with the colonialists. Yet the fabric of their society was already utterly destroyed.
What if any other powers would have been the annexer ? If Japan would have occupied Hawaii, the US most likely had nuked the islands in WW II. The Russians would have made it into a Pacific Cuba with missiles pointed at the US or sold it as they did with Alaska. The French would have let it rot like Haiti, and the Germans would have lost it quickly after WW1 to either French or Brits. The Brits would have made it into a manicured colony i.e. Bermuda or Hong Kong, and evtl. around 1960-70 given it its independence. Now from there on HAwaii would have been in the hands of a fat political caste (native or only claiming to be) trying to play the USSR against the US for military & food aid. And would have secured its grip on power with guns aimed at political parties and the hungry simple folks. Corruption would have been rampant, torture, imprisonment, capital punishment, deforestation and environmental destruction would be the associations with the word "Hawaii".
Look at the early history beyond sentimentalism: Only the aid of Western guns and ships enabled the great Kamehameha I to conquer all Hawaiian islands! Not canoes and sling shots. Western beef enabled him to feed his population, trade with Western whalers brought him technology & goodies and caused the population to cut down most of their coastal forests, all cedar trees e.g. The Micronesians were the first ones on HAwaii. Then the Polynesians came. The Polynesians made sure that THEIR world came to an end. Contact with the rest of the world changed Hawaii. Contact was inevitable. That the US annexed it with the ideals of freedom, liberty, pursuit of happiness e.g. was the best of all the bad possibilities.
Yet the Hawaiian movements work is to be admired and very, very important. Hawaii is a special place and only they can teach a raw, aggressive and uncultivated US why this place is so important and unique. There have to be special rights and protection and dialogue.

Were not the Hawaiians, and their sovereign government, overthrown by the US in the late 1800s and then annexed by the US at that time? Then made state in 1959?

What's to annex?

Self governance; now that is an issue that could be discussed
