penalties vary by State, in Ohio

a first degree misdemeanor (highest misdemeanor)
6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine is the maximum.

Usually no more than probation and a fine. Unless the abused family member was an at risk senior. Then you're going to jail.

A mis (mistake) Demeanor (Behavior) Is considred a lesser crime punishable by a fine and no more than than 6 months in Jail .It all depends on a judge which he will impose
