Bible is fine

Why should we swear an oath on ANY book? We need to face the obvious - swearing an oath on the Bible DOES NOT prevent anyone from lying or giving false testimony - just look at every politician who has sworn an oath of office and has been busted for one fraudulent act or another... So, if I do not beleive in the Bible, why should I be forced to swear upon it?

Do you know where the word TESTIMONY comes from? It comes to us from the Romans. See, in those days, before you testified, you placed your right hand over your testicles, and swore to tell the truth, under pain of losing your balls. So, perhaps we should bring that practice back, rather than swearing a hollow oath on an archaic book...

You swear on what you want. I'll just affirm under penalty of perjury. Anything more than this insultingly presumes that i'm a liar--or as attributed to Jesus, "comes from evil."

P.S. To those who say our country was founded on : Which country would that be?

As civilization slowly dawns over the world, they will adopt the appropriate form. Even today, in those areas of the world and the U.S. where reason is not the mortal enemy, one is not required to "swear" on the scribblings of primitive and murderous tribesmen.

I shouldn't have to swear on any book. My word should be enough--and it is in the state where I live. Never seen anyone actually swear in on a Bible or Quran.

When I did jury duty last year, they didn't even bring out a book. It was just "swear or affirm".

Swearing on a Bible is just silly because those who don't believe in Jesus can lie all they want.
