I have a two year old short-hair neutered male cat. I leave out dry food all day for him and water. A few times a day I feed him wet canned food. He is not overweight, he is actually in really great physical condition for eating so much. But anyways, since January, my sister and I noticed that his tail gets fat and bushy when we go to feed him the canned food or even pet him in the kitchen area. The last cat i had was very small and when she would get a fat bushy tail it seemed like it was because she was scared. But for my male cat, it seems like his tail gets aroused when we give him canned food. Can someone please tell me why or what do you think? thanks!!

I have 2 cats (1 male, 1 female) whose tails get bushy just at the base when they're extremely happy.

By the way, wet food is actually better for your cat than dry. It has more protein and fewer carbs. Dry has way too many carbs for cats.

That's normal for a cat .Cats get the bushy and fat tail when they get anxious or exited over something and also when they get scared.

He is excited.

I found my current cat when she was 3 weeks old and I had to bottle feed her for a couple of weeks. When I bottle fed her, her tail would stick straight out, bush up, and jiggle back and forth the whole time she was eating.

Your cat's tail is probably a holdover from when he was a kitten.

Your cats tail expresses emotion. Everything from excitement to fear. I can only assume that he's very happy you are feeding him. What does his tail look like when he's about to go to the vet?

Cats do this to defend themselves- maybe he's saying "Watch out or I'll give you a good swish of my tail because this food is MINE"- to other kitties and not you, I hope.

He has feelings for you he can't explain.........so he shows you. It's Pavlovian. He equates the wet food and kitchen with a very enjoyable experience for him.

I get that way when my wife makes me a special treat.....

There's nothing you can do. He's just feeling territorial about his food dish. I think it sounds kind of cute, actually.

well, arousal is one way to describe it, but not in the sexual terms that we normally think of.

the fluffing of the tail just means that your cat is happy.

true, they also bush out their tails when they are scared, but that is usually accompanied by their body hair bushing out too.

Huh...that's a first! I've never heard of that - is he hissing at you? Maybe he's getting a chubb cuz of his food.
