What is a Kernel? What is the purpouse of it?

I am computer illiterate, but sometimes I get errors that say something about a Kernel, what is a Kernel?

A Kernel is the central portion of a computer's operating system. It's the base control for all operations between hardware and software. Plenty of resources out on the web to expand on the explanation.

A Kernel is the very core of the os, basicly the kernel is the os - pretty graphics ect.
