In the United States Army in order to be an officer one needs a bachelors degree.
In order to become a field grade officer (major or above) one needs to have an advanced degree.
My guess is that there are very few generals/admirals in the US military without at least one advanced degree (ie PhD, multiple masters).
These rules are not written in stone. My Grandfather had a HS education and retired from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonol. But he was a battlefield commision in WWII and spent most of his career as a Captain and was only promoted to Lt. Col. Days before he retired as a sort of reward for his long service in multiple wars, etc.
On the flip side, I served in the Illinois National Guard, and well over half of the non comms have college degrees and my platoon sergeant had a doctorate. I think this is illustrative of the increasing requirements of higher education to advance in a military career.
As far as cardiologists are concerned. Figure 4 for undergrad. 4 for med school. 2 as an intern. 2 as an attending in a cardio unit. 12 years. 8 where you pay through the nose and 2 where they pay you practically nothing before you start making much money at all.
Dental school is easier. Undergrad is 4 + 3 more of dental school.

To become a general, you have to graduate from West Point (for starters)... then a long road from there...
I'm guessing from the second part of your question, maybe you didn't mean that though... :) If you meant a dentist, then it's the same for medical school (4 years college, 4 years dental school)...
For a cardiologist, you'll need 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, then a year or 2 of residency...
