Congrats! Go Tigers!!
I'm from the big BR. Um, there's no surf! There's baseball kickball and hunting and fishing, that's pretty much the local sports scene (but you'll have a blast supporting LSU athletics, everyone bleeds purple and gold!).
There's some really fun hot spots, along Chimes Street and under the Perkins overpass, the Varsity is a great spot.
You'll love Mardi Gras, you don't even have to go to Nawlins. But it's only an hour away, you'll get to the French Quarter more than once while you're at LSU.
There's a big frat scene if you're into that, if not there's plenty of hippies running around.
Go to Coffee Call on College Drive to study. Say hi to Eddie Eddie, he makes that place and everyone knows him.
You can go to the LSU lakes to party and make out, have fun!~

Baton Rouge is a pretty cool place. Lots to do etc., neat little restaurants. Don't live there but went to LSU (in dark ages) and daughter just graduated from there and made it her home. Shopping is better than many other places (except for NO). Traffic can be yuck, but then again I'm in the country so it depends on what you're used to. A good friend owns a pub just outside the gates. She's had it about 10 years now, check it out if you're into that. Housing?? Try to get inside scoop before just picking out something if you are staying off campus. Just like any city that size, there are some bad areas. And whatever you do, make sure you go to the Chimes at least once.
Surf??? Not----the La. coast is not a place for that, besides not having waves it's brown and not too pretty until you get towards the Florida panhandle, but I still don't think any surfing is there. There is alot of recreational boating just outside BR and rivers to go tubing. And when really bored, NO is just an hour away.

Baton Rouge is my home town. I've been gone for over 20 + years, but I go back every year and still have family there.
LSU is a GREAT school. I don't know where you live now, but you must know the following: It's Hot, It's muggy (humid), lots of bugs--especially mosquitos and 'love bugs'--something only the Gulf Coast knows about--The up side is there is always something to do. Lots of great food. You will be approx. 2 hours away from New Orleans. Some of the roads are still crappy but most are being redone and repaved or have been recently. I miss living there at times. Because I am 'one of the people', I think the people there are great. But you will have jerks/weirdos what have you, wherever you might go. I'll be back in September and can't wait. I hope you have great experiences there. No surfing--You will see that the Mississippi River runs through Baton Rouge and there are lakes, creeks, ponds, etc...There are some lakes that have water skiing. I wish you much luck!

Wow, I go to Auburn so I am a little biased. Great school, kind of older and what alot of southerners(not from Loisianna) call Loisianna junky (If you have been to N.Orleans, then you know what I am talking about). Great on game days, people are very friendly, lots of drinking and partying, awesome food, excellent education, town is very louisiana. Can get very sketchy just off campus. Stay away from the casinos near the campus if you dont want to get jacked. Have fun you will find people to be funny and accepting. Dont pick any fights because they are some tough folks.
