I do believe that it takes a village to raise a child
so if you are close to your family and they are interested in being part of the process of raising your children you should be close (proximity wise) to them. as they get older it is important that a strong family support system is in place to deal with the issues that arise during adolescence

I moved 250 miles away from my family and I was blessed because we kept in touch to see each other each year during our summer vacation. I was raising 2 daughters when we moved those 250 miles after moving I had 4 more children.Thank God for my family they were always there for me and my kids when we needed them and they still are and my kids living miles away still manage to see family.
If you don't move to the town your family lives in at least keep your kids in touch with the family members
