The absinthe that is sold in the United States is known as 'clean absinthe.' It doesn't contain wormwood, which is the active ingedient in it. I've tried the real thing and it's very overrated.

The illegal kind banned almost universily that drove Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allen Poe, and others crazy? Not personally.
But the legal substitute that can still send you on a serious trip? Not personally. But the good folks at Liquor Snob did. Clicky the link for some good, (somewhat) reputable reviews. http://www.liquorsnob.com/archives/cat_absinthe.php

yup, the illegal one and legal one. Both seemed pretty much the same to me. Had 3-4 shots of both each time and felt grand. First time I had a shot of it though it was a bit of a shock...especially because it was the first shot I'd ever had!

They don't make it as they used to. Today Absinthe is just a codeword for high alcohol content beverage.

Yes.
It's primary flavor is anise...like black liquorice. If you don't like liquorice, don't bother, you won't like Absinthe.
All the stories of hallucination and making people go mad are just myth.
Nonetheless, it's still illegal to manufacture and sell in the US...for no real reason.

Edgar Allen Poe did. It was legal when he was alive. If you think you'd like to try it, read his biography.
