The moving part of your axel will have a bearing. Usually bearings will use a grease of some description. Get your bike shop to do this, as you may inadvertantly push dirt into the bearings. They might even be sealed.

There are two things that you should be throwing lubricant at. Chain and cables.

For the chain, depends upon the type of riding, but in winter you want a wet, sticky compound (I use finish line). This is a wax. In summer, I so not want dust etc sticking to the chain and forming grinding paste. So I use dry wax. Inspect your chain regularly. This should help prolong life. Also, buy a power link so that you can take the chain off periodically, soak in white spirit and then re-wax.

DO NOT USE WD40. This was designed to coat components (Rockets) and was used as a water dispercant in cars. NO GOOD FOR Mountain bikes or any bike what so ever. It will also attract dirt after a short time.

Luck

do not use WD 40 on any part of your bike
go to your local bike shop and see what they sell... also check the bearings, if they are sealed, then you can't lube them,

I just Tri Flow with Teflon for all wet conditions, and Pedros Dry Lube for drier conditions
