They keep trying to change society by promoting hatred and bigotry.
Atheism. You know it makes sense.

I think the best work is done at the level of the local church. Many set up rehab centres for drug addicts, They get their people involved in volunteer activities. Some are a bit out of the loop, but in general, I think churches seek to contribute to the local situation as much as they can.
I know of a church that set up a soup kitchen for street people, and other churches of different denominations are now cooperating with them. And then they opened a Day Centre for them as well. When the City Hall decided to get rid of a tent-town within the city, where street people were sheltering, the church held a demonstration in front of the City Hall.
Being a baptist, I am more familiar with the efforts of local churches. In any case I believe it is in the local level where you really make a difference. On the other hand our denomination foreign mission branch has a sub-section dealing with international relief: there again funds and human help go to disaster areas, earthquakes and floods, etc. and also ongoing problems such as widows in countries where widows have no protection; help for teen mothers; homes for abandoned children and children at risk... you name it, it is being done.
Churches of all kinds are involved. Even those in the USA who are taking a strongly public and unpopular stance against abortion, are opening homes for unwed mothers, offering all sorts of alternatives.

They teach that people should love others as much as themselves taking one step at a time to accomplish that goal, but that is never good enough since they fall short of loving everyone and in laying down their own lives for someone else's mistakes. Falling short is tough on a person's self image and since no one can accomplish the ultimate, everyone feels short and is dumping that on others. Churches and religious leader may try to change, themselves, and fall short, and also dump on others. Society needs something else.

It is not the duty of the religous orders nor the churches to make improvements or changes in the society, they are there to safeguard the morality of the changing attitudes towards liberalism. Justifying the mistakes by saying that to be wrong is only human without trying to upkeep the level of decency.
There is nothing wrong with the advancing state of life but the church should be there to maintain the sanity of man not by putting too much guilt into human errors but guiding them to be able to stand up to every downfall in ones life.

By converting as many as possible to their faith. The fact that this neither helps nor changes society is a moot point. The leaders themselves often get in troubles of their own.

They kind of don't.
All the extra space, money, and resources either aren't used, or go to the higher members.
It's sad, actually. Of all the organizations that should be improving society, the church as a whole does the least.

Well, St. Jude's comes to mind. I know many Christian charities out there seeking to help unwed mothers become better parents...and help them get an education. I see a lot of things that Christians do to help make this world a better place for the present time. I'd hate to see the state of this world without such people & organizations.

Working on poverty issues, working on issues regarding prejudice, helping rebuild homes and towns destroyed by storms, mission work at home and overseas to provide education and medicine to countries that do not have them. Building churches, homes, hospitals and schools overseas. Providing food and emergency funds to people suffering within the local community. That is a scratch on the surface.
