Even once the healing process is done, the sun is an issue. Wear the best protection sunblock you can find over the tattoo. The ink can be faded at any time by sunlight, it's just more vulnerable early on.

your artist didnt go over this with you? I am glad you asked...shows you care.
Wait 3 weeks just to be safe. I know this news sucks...I kinda planned out my tat work wrong in the sense I do like the lakes and stuff
HOWEVER, be advised that you have to give some things up when you get a tat. I used to get to the lake around noon and hang all day. Now I will be getting there towards the end of the day and doin a little swimming, then enjoy some sunset action and nighttime stuff.
The sun will ruin your tat.
FROM MY SHOP:
Fresh Tattoo
Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing
Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

It takes most tattoos 3-4 weeks to heal fully. You should wait at least that long before going in a pool or getting a lot of sun.

Forget it, unless you want the ink ruined.
Also, the skin is still healing, it's irritated from the needle. If you expose it to the sun, you'll ruin it.
Better go swimming three weeks after, at night. I'm surprised the Tattoo Artists didn't tell you this.

You have to wait three weeks. I remember specifically because it was April when I got mine and I asked the tattoo artist because I wanted to make sure I would be able to swim when the pools opened on Memorial Day.

you should wait for another couple of weeks at least and then still wear strong sunblock to prevent fading.
I personally wouldve waited til after spring break but thats just me. i have to go back in for a touch up but i'm putting it off cause i have 2 concerts to go to in the next couple days and i dont need to have a fresh tattoo where all kinda ppl are acting crazy.

I'd wait until after the scabbing process has run it's course - between the sun, the chlorine and salt water, you could really mess up your piece.
