Basically, I have very dark brown hair at the moment. Unfortunately, I can't afford to have my hair coloured at a salon but desperately want to dye it to a sort of blonde caramel colour similar to that of Nicole Richie's hair. I was wondering how to get my dark hair this light at home? I've heard of lightening kits, would that be a good choice and then to dye it afterwards?
Any help much appreciated, thankyou everyone!

go to a beauty supply store, get some hair bleach and some peroxide/developer. there are instrutions how to mix it, but essentially what you do is mix the bleach and peroxide in a bowl, apply to hair a quarter inch away from the scalp to the ends all over the hair, make sure you are wearing gloves it may make your hand burn other wise, leave on until desiered color. if you put a shower cap over it it will lighten a bit faster.
wash and condition, if you're afraid of driness, mix a bit or baby oil or olive oil in with a bit of your conditioner and apply to hair, put a shower cap over that and warm with a hair dryer. will add shin and softness back.
i've done it to my hair and my girlfrineds hair and we turned out diva's.

Well i'm only 12 years old but i'm smarter than you think!!! ( I act mature 4 my age!!) You should probably just get a box of hair color from the store.....My hair was light brown and i dyed it dark brown and it came out great!!! A really good brand 2 buy is natural match I think it's by loriel paris. It colors very good and looks very natural. Even better it dosn't have ammonia or peroxide in it so it won't damage your hair! My hair is still very soft after using it. Another way i have heard of but have never tried is to get concentrated lemon juice at the store. You saturate that in your hair and then you go lie out in the sun 4 about 20-30 minutes. My hair dresser told me this! I hope this helps you!!!!

peroxide which completely fries your hair....?
really dye or bleach is the only way to go. Maybe a home dye kit? I use one to dye my hair auburn, and it works really well. The Herbal Essences kits are good and leave your hair in good shape, plus they come with AMAZING conditioner.
Other than that, you better hope genies exist and that you find one soon, becuase the sun and lemon juice may lighten it up a little, but it's only going to bring out your natural highlights, and there aren't really any other quick fixes.
By the way... DON'T FORGET YOUR EYEBROWS! Unless you're going for that totally fake blond look

Sun in , but it sounds like your hair is too dark, but maybe peroxide?!? A lightning kit would be good but the best choice is go to a beauty college they are great there and extra cheap I get my hair colored there all the time.

lightening kits are quite good, also try putting in blonde highlights before using a blonde dye this will give you multi tones of blonde

The sun...or some stores have things yu spray in your hair and either blow dry or play in the sun those are good to.

I recommend you go to your nearest CVS or something. They have cheap dye in tons of colors
