Adult Literacy Rates?

I am doing a speech for my public speaking class trying to get people to give money or time to the local Adult Literacy Council, and I'm needing some facts about Adult Literacy Rates. Can anyone tell me what the percentage of Adults that aren't Literate are? Or any other good facts about Adult Literacy? Thanks.

I went through a literacy training program, and what surprised me is that there are degrees of literacy. Some people can read, but they can't read for comprehension.
