As it's been said, anything can cause anything. But ECT properly administered has a record of safety and efficacy. It is not used nearly as often today as it was 30 or more years ago. It was used quite often to treat symptoms of depression, as well as other conditions.

I had ECT twice. The only thing I suffered was some sickness in my stomach and a headache that lasted most of the day.

Some people experience temporary memory loss that may last a couple months, but most don't.

It's safe and effective when used for the right reasons.

It can cause temporary memory loss but has no lasting adverse effects. Certainly not brain damage.

YES!!!!! I met someone who had undergone ECT, several times, and it traumatised her so badly... I can not explain. And she got it for a condition that had nothing to do with brain chemicals.
