You cannot tell the difference. Mostly because there is no difference - it is all faked...
Just watch the movie BORAT - he fakes it inside a huge church, and everyone present is fooled into thinking he is acutallly speaking in tongues! Best part of the movie!!!

If you can't understand them they are faking & speaking gibberish.
Speaking in tongues refers to being able to learn another language very easily & quickly.
It also refers to when you are speaking your own language someone who speaks another language is hearing what you are saying & understanding it in their own language.
ACTS 2:4-6 The Day of Pentecost (note verse 6)
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

I guess you can't. The Bible teaches that unless someone is present that can interpret and understand what is being said, speaking in tongues is useless and should not be done. I guess it's sort of like trying to tell a Russian, who doesn't understand English, what to do. He/she has no idea what you're saying. Unless tongues can be understood, don't even try it.

First the ONLY reason as it says in Acts 2 for the gift of speaking in tongues is spreading the gospel and as with any other thing about God Isa 8:20 States this 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them.

It's hard to fake speaking another language, but I'm sure a linguistic expert of some type could evaluate whether or not a person is just jabbering or speaking some type of coherant language.

If they are sitting down, they are faking it. If they are standing up, they are also faking it. Actually, if they are "speaking in tongues" at all, they are faking it. Of course if they took classes in a language, they might remember some of it. (Those are the guys saying "How much is the fare?" in French while praising the Lord.)

If you use the strict biblical definition of tongues, the person is speaking a real language they don't know or they are speaking a divine language and someone there understands it.
In otherwords, most of the very same fundies who claim to be biblical literalists are not so literal when it comes to their actions.

well, mass and self hypnosis is well documented so even tho the spiritually inspired are faking they aren't faking because they believe what they do is real.
