I started coloring my hair about 3 years ago. After it always turning red, no matter what I did, I started coloring it black (about a year now), because that was my natural color. Now, when my roots grow out, it's this strange shade of medium brown that I never had before. I'm kind of sick of dying my hair all the time and I don't want that weird strip thing while it grows out. Is my only option to go to a salon and have them do it?

what brand of color do you usually use? Call the toll-free number on the package, and explain to the customer service person what the deal is, and see if they can give you some advice before you head to a salon.

I have the same problem. I naturally, had light brown hair. I have colored my hair many many many colors, and i want it back natural colored now. I colored my hair a medium/light brown and now i have roots of a DARKER brown.... i dont know why though. I think the roots are a different color because they havent had the same amount of damge done to them. Like from the sun, and straightner, things like that. But i think if i grow my roots out and leave them alone they, and the whole head of hair, will start to slowly fade back to your normal color. If you want it natural i think you shouldnt color it anymore. I had blonde highlights before and they are starting to pop through the brown now. It looks pretty good.

But for your case......
Ok So your hair is a black color , with brown roots. Well, if you went to a salon they can color just your roots and that means the rest of your hair isnt getting even more damaged. I think that would work. {{{ my mom is a hair stylist so she has told me alot.}}}} OK hope that helped!!!!♥

if you hair is growing out in the strange brown shade you could have like messed up your hair folicles or something and its causeing it to turn out that color.i have naturally dark brown hair and when i was like 2 i got into my moms hair color and i put it in my hair and it was black and its been like.about 10 years (maybe it was sooner and i never noticed) and its now growing out in the natural color again.

you might want to find somebody that knows hair REALLY well and see if they know whats up
