The ones you should memorize are the "four quis"

Al-Ikhlas is one. The other three are Kafiroon, Falaq and Nas. They all start out with "Qul"

Surah Kauther is the shortest (yet very powerful) and Surah Asr and Nasr are also only 3 ayahs. I suggest learning these first, their meanings are so powerful!

This is the website I use to memorize the short surahs. It has the recitations by ayah, the arabic, the translations and english transliteration.

www.mounthira.com

Note: I can write them out on here if you want, but the website does a much better job of it.

Surah Al Kosar

[108:1] In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

[108:2] Surely, We have bestowed upon thee an abundance of good;

[108:3] So pray to thy Lord, and offer sacrifice.

[108:4] Surely, it is thy enemy who shall be without issue.

Sorry couldn't quickly find it in Arabic. Sura Koser is the shortest Sura in the Quran. Many other short Suras with the link to the forum below. Most written in English but some in Arabic. Salaamz.

Go to yahoo search. You'll find many pages offering suraat ul-Qur'an in Arabic and also English transliteration.

Let me remind you that as for validity of your prayer your recitation must be in Arabic according to rules of tajweed, not translation of a surah, not in any Arabic dialect.

Minimum required number of ayaat (verses) is 3 and they must be consequent. It isn't necessary to recite an entire surah in one rak'ah, let's say you know couple of consequent verses from surah Al Emran, you can recite them. Your recitation on the first rak'ah should be longer than the one in second rak'ah or at least equal, but if your surah on second rak'ah is longer, shouldn't be longer by more than 3 verses.

Hope that helps. For accurate pronounciation learn to read Arabic. I recommend you to visit www.islamway.com, download some suraat from Qur'an section and listen to them. If you don't know which recitor to download try Rashid Al-Mesh'ari (not sure how his name is written on the English page). His recordings are quite recent and clear compare to taraweekh recordings or older recordings. Sound quality is nice and they have his recordings of complete Qur'an, I hope.

If you're a new Muslim convert mail me please.
