I caught a virus that has caused my gums to swell and become sensitive. What are some at home treatments to help alleviate some of the pain and swelling. Any good suggestions would be appreciated!!

How do you know you "caught" a virus? I am a dental hygienist (35 years) and this sounds more like gingivitis to me. For at home care, I would definitely be brushing 2-3 times a day, gently of course, but enough to clean the plaque from your teeth. Flossing is a must every day. Your gums may bleed but do not quit brushing and flossing. It is imperative that you do that. Also, I would call the dentist if I were you and make an appointment for an evaluation. Good luck and take care of yourself.

I have never heard of a virus doing that. Try warm salt water- what exactly are they calling it? ANUDS is not viral but can do that, an antibiotic is required, Thrush or yeast infection and that requires nyastatin rinse, cold sores - they have varius creams out. Did your doctor or dentists diagnosis this? I would see my dentist and ask for RX for rinses- or creams he feels are appropiate. If he gave you nothing or won't give you anything, see your medical doctor and see if he agrees with the diagnosis. They make things like orajel over the counter, Kenalog is for the mouth but requires a prescription. They give it for mouth sores. If you are happy with the diagnosis- then it's just warm sal twater and something like orajel to numb the gum.

I would say epsom salts in warm water. Dont swallow it, or you'll get the runs, but swish with it and soak your gums in it. You might also consider ice chips.
