Historically, certain groups of people have historically discriminated against. To make the playing field "somewhat equal," racial minorities are given jobs they would, in the past, not have access to. These jobs have higher pay than they would get otherwise. Don't sweat the small stuff. Visualize yourself as a racial minority. Go to a store buy and and put on blackface or Asian make-up and see how you are treated. Walk around as a racial minority for a week and see how your world changes.

I'm not sure blacks/asians get priority treatment, however minorities are encoraged to apply in order for the ethnic profile of the police to reflect the community which it serves.
In response to the comment about black people being described as black, but with whites colour/race not being mentioned there is also another side to the coin.
Why is it that you often hear about "the black community" or the "asian community", or have organisations such as "black police association". If you put the word white in the above sentences there would be outrage and uproar!!!
Yes, I am white.

Times have changed. His question is half right. LAPD ex-chief Parks did lower the entrance exam to accept minorities that scored below 70%, but whites had to score 80%+. Not very many minorities were passing these written exams, so they had to lower the standards, and that's a fact. You might think you see lots of minorities, but that's what they want you to see. It's propoganda and there are still alot more white officers to minority officers, you just don't see them.
The reason for this is because alot of the minorities: city leaders, organizations, etc... in L.A., were complaining there were too many white officers, so they wanted to hire more officers to represent the city, Community Policing. This new type of policing front goes for all major cities around the U.S. I don't agree with it, and I'm a minority. But I don't live there anymore and feel alot safer!, lol

Of course it's a form of racial discrimination but don't hold your breath waiting for Trevor Phillips or any other of his chums doing anything about it. Racial discrimination is a one way street to be exploited by the so called ethnic minorities and others to the disadvantage of white British people. After all this time there should have been an absolutely fair system in place so that everyone regardless of race or colour had the same chance.

In the UK this is called positive discrimination though I cant see anything positive if you happen to be a white male heterosexual. It got so ridiculous that at one time the police training centres in the UK had up to 80% female recruits in training.Just another of Mrs Thatchers legacies Im afraid.

Because for a long long time in this country jobs like law enforcement where passed along the "old boys" network. The idea of putting an African American in charge of whites was like having your baby sister watch you when your parents left. (a joke, unimaginable) So now we have system that encourages all people to apply (I don't know if anyone gets "special treatment" or not)
Is it fair? Well ask yourself this question.
When describing a white person you had a conversation with to another party do you automatically say they are white? Do you mention if they are black?
a black person has an automatic check aganist them or least something noteworthy about them while we see nothing different about the white person.
white preference exists in our country because we still see color

Applicants for police jobs are based on personal merits and not race, it's a tough course mentally and physically and a very demanding role in an ever increasing violent world.
Of course the police and many other services need people from many cultures as representitives to break down the barriers that seem to have grown over the years.

Its all about racial equality, nothing to do with the qualifications to do the job, which make the white Englishman a discriminated citizen in his own country. just imagine what its going to be like for us in another 50yrs time

I don't know where you live but here, the people who want to get a job in law enforcement are tested and interviewed and even at times retested after their probationary period. To the best of my knowledge, you are chosen on your knowledge of the field you choose to enter. If you are a fire fighter, you have to attend school, you have to go through an interview process and then after your probation you are tested again. If you are the best qualified for the job, you will be hired.
