For the middle-aged V-8's Only.
The small block 260-289-351W engines are obviously smaller your hand will reach across the intake manifold. The water neck part of the intake looks like it goes around the distributor. The valve cover has six bolts.
The 351 Cleveland has a more rounded look to the intake ports and the matching part of the intake manifold and the bolts to the fuel pump are oriented vertically (one over the other) and the fuel pump bolts onto the block not the cover.
The valve cover has eight bolts.
The small block 400 has a 1/2 inch taller block therefore the intake is a little wider.
The 332-352-390-427-428 (FE) series are much larger engines with valve covers with 5 bolts each. The valve cover extends over part of the intake manifold. The block has a "skirt" on it, a portion that extends down beyond the main bearings and caps.
The old 292-312 "Y blocks" had a simular skirt but the engine is smaller and the exhaust from the passenger side is routed across the top and front of the engine to the driver side manifold. The intake ports are also oriented two by two, side by side, (not evenly spaced like all the other Ford V-8's.). The valve covers are held on by only two bolts.
The massive 383-462 Lincoln/Mercury engine looked like a magnified version of the Y-bolck but it had six bolts holding the valve cover.
The 429-460 (385 series) engines have a valve cover held on by seven bolts. It has the rounded look to the intake ports like the 351C but is obviously larger.

Older Ford engine had a code such as a letter on the vin on the drivers door that code letter could be found in most motor manuals under engine specifications and would say what it is. Cubic inch and such. Newer engine have a sticker on valve covers or in front of engine compartment or older ones had a sticker on the breather also. Other Ford engines had a cubic inch stamped on motor usually up front by water pump old ford 390 etc was under the intake manifold stamped on lifter galley etc.

Ford motors most of them have the distributor in front and most GM motors have the distributor in the back. depending on the the year and size of the motor. You almost have to be familiar with the different models between early and late models. Really there are several distinguishing visibles things to look for, too many to list. just have to know what to look for.

hard to say . Like the chevy 305 and 350 you can tell by looking on the rear left of the engine for the number 5 L or 5.2 L I think. Otherwise you can not tell. But if the original engine you would look under the hood somewhere and it will have the size of engine that should be in there.

Check this out... good info, and some pictures that may help.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine
The 360/390 engines are easy to spot... the intake manifold makes up about half the head. If you've ever had to pull a cast-iron intake off of one you'll never forget it.
Also check the casting numbers on the heads and the blocks, you can write them down and reference them easily online. Just do a search for "Ford Engine Block Casting Numbers" and you should find a few resources to reference them to.
Try this site for example...
