Not really, in my opinion. Depending on where you live the Kelly Blue Book private party value put the '99 Mustang up there in price. For example, if you live in California it puts the mustang at around $8,000, but if you live in the midwest or anywhere else where it snows it's only $7.000. For me thats pretty expensive. I bought the older car that I have for $500 and it's been good to me. I would get something older first and save up for my mustang and pay for it out right. Car payments are a pain in the butt.

Up keep is relativly inexpensive because it is a domestic car. You can get parts from any local auto parts store or even a junk yard. There are even specialty shops that do nothing but Ford motorcraft sport parts.

Insurance is astronomical for anyone under 25. The mustang is classified as a sports car which comes with a higher rate for insurance as it is. However, they are a lot of fun to drive.. especially if you get a manual trans. :)

It would be a very expensive first car. Insurance alone will be quite expensive. The car itself has a few drawbacks as well. Fuel mileage is pretty bad, and this is especially important to someone that does not make a lot of money. Reliability has been pretty good, and resale is good as well.

This car is a very old design, with the platform sourced from 1979. Ergonomics are lousy, and the car will shake and rattle all over the place on most roads. Maybe a first time driver can live with this a lot easier. This car also has a lot of power for a first timer, and convertibles are also hard to see out of with significant blind spots.

This car is better suited to a more experienced driver, and even then does not make a very good daily commuter. It is too fast and too hard to see out of for a first time driver. Insurance will be quite expensive, and the cars poor mileage will be painful at the pump. I would have loved to have one as my first car, but I could barely afford the 80hp Honda and the cost of insuring that. And I got into enough trouble with that.

A Mustang GT or any other "sports" car will have VERY high insurance rates especially for a teenager. Also, GT's have 8 cylinder engines which are not a fuel efficient as a 6 or a 4 cylinder.

Up-keep: yes. Might be thirsty at the gas pump if you keep the pedal to the floorboards

Insurance: NO. This is a classified as a high-risk vehicle.

They are popular and hold their value. You would be paying a price for their popularity. Other used cars may be less expensive.

Isn't it like 23K...no, not a cheap first car but if you can afford it, handle, and love it, I would go for it!
