Wouldn't it be better for your friend to talk to his/her Dr about it? From what i understand, you need to live as a member of your intended sex for ( i think) a year, while having psychiatric evaluations. Then, if its still what you want, the hormones can start, and eventually, any operations discussed. I don't understand how anyone can feel like they are the wrong sex- what is the difference between feeling like a man or a woman?
PS- this has very little to do with dental health, unless I'm missing something.

the waiting list for the surgery itself is not very long once certain criteria are forfilled such as persuading a pyscharist that you really want the op, that you've lived life as the opposite sex for a while, taken the hormones for the correct length of time. The ops are often not done all at once so breasts may be added/removed sometime before genitals are touched(primarily because that breasts can be removed/rebuilt if patient realises they have made a mistake.)
There can sometimes be elements of facial reconstruction which can be done indepentantly of the other surgery and then a dentist may be involved( have direct experince of this with more than one patient)

But to answer your original question the time frame is not usually any less than 5 years from first asking a GP for referral till final op but is often longer.

I do not know whether you can have a sexchange on the NHS, after
all it's hardly a health issue. Just someone who does'nt know whether they're Mr or Mrs.

Since this is in the dental threads, I would say; Never go to a dentist for a sex change unless you have a VERY high tolerance for pain.
I had sex yesterday, paid 20 bucks and I din't get no change. Should I demand sex change?

WTF has this do to with dental problems? Is your friend on a budget and looking for a cheap "surgeon"?
