My ex wrote me an email stating for the past 6 years he had hated himself and that he had decided to change for the better. That he was tired of throwing his life away. In there he also threw something in about another chance and starting things new. Can a person truly change if they have decided to do it on their own in their best interest?

We are still friends. Its not like something terrible happened to cause us breaking up. The timing was just really wrong.

It is very possible for someone to change on their own because they wanted to.
That is the very best reason to change is because you want to and are ready to.
You must love yourself before you can expect anyone else to love you.
If you are uncertain of his change then at least give him the benefit of the doubt and tell him that you would like to spend time with him and then make your own conclusions about if he has or hasn't.
But I am sure you have heard...........that nobody can change a person unless they want to be changed.
So if he wanted to change for the better then maybe he did, give him a chance.
What can it hurt?

I think that is the only way an untrustworthy person will change. For themselves. He would have to prove himself before I trusted him again. The narcissist can always come back! Be careful.

Whether or not you doubt he'll change, you have the opportunity to give it enough time to determine if he actually can change. We can all make changes if we want to badly enough. It's probably okay to tell him that you are willing to take the 'wait and see approach' before deciding anything definite. Good Luck

Absolutely they can. If you're still friends and you have an interest, start spending more time with him and see what happens. Maybe you'll fall in love with him all over again.

Yes but see it before you believe it, it's a great way for guys to keep stringing a girl along if that is in fact his mission.

If you're still interested in him that way, I say give it a shot, what have you got to lose?
