I`ve already answered a similar question to this recently but here goes - 90+% are wrong - the word "Chef" has nothing to do with cooking - it literally means "Chief/Boss" i.e the team manager of the French football team is the "Chef d`Equipe" In the kitchen you have a "Chef de Cuisine" - Head Chef, "Sous Chef" - under or second chef, "Chef de Partie" - chef in charge of a section of the kitchen etc, etc, etc. I am a chef but I cook for a living therefore I am a Cook - there is no stigma attached to this title!!!

A chef has more experience and a great deal of knowledge. Being called a chef is about respect for that experience and knowledge. Ive been to culinary school and I did graduate with honors. I have limited experience and still have much to learn as I continue in my career. I do not consider myself a chef. It is something that I aspire to become. Where I work, I dont follow a recipe, and I do cook really good food. It has nothing to do with where you work or what you cook.

although they may seem to do the same thing, they are different. a chef is "a skilled cook who manages the kitchen". a cook is "a person who prepares food for eating". anyone who can cook is considered a cook but a chef is a proffesional who has a degree in the culinary arts.
