- Try to dress as the locals do, if you are comfortable with that.
- Eat at local restaurants, where the locals go.
- Attempt to learn some of the language, and use whatever words/phrases you know.
- Most importantly be respectful of the culture, society and the people. Don't expect special treatment because you are out of country, expect to be treated just as everyone else. It is mainly about your attitude.

Stay at a bed & breakfast, as opposed to a hotel.
You'll be in direct contact with people who actually live where you'll be travelling to, and they'll know the best places to visit and shop (not just hand you a brochure like in a hotel).
Also, try to keep your camera out a site (this is a dead giveaway that you're a tourist).
