any bike will last if you store it inside (not outside in the weather) and you maintain it (keep it clean, lubed, etc.)
some bikes will not stand up to a lot of abuse, so you need to look at the quality of bikes... the names you mentioned are not at the top of the quality list, but they may work for you. I have found that if you don't spend at least 500 to 600 bucks, you won't have a bike that will last very long or stand up to much abuse.
Take a look at KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant

That all depends on what you want to use the bike for. If you want to use it for daily road biking, yes absolutely. I have found with my cheapy roadmaster (which I stripped the stupid logos off) to be quite adequate, and I bike about 4-7 miles daily. There has been little maintenance that has had to be done, such as a new de railer, and wheel bearings that I refit. Not everyone can invest a steep $500-600$ for just biking. Either way, my bike has lasted me since last May. I also have another Roadmaster, I have also been using since 2005, I just prefer men's bikes, and they do not look as cheesy. Bikes are made to last. ;)

I would think they do. My first bike is a Schwinn Mesa, I bought it in 2004 (jan or feb), and I gave it to my dad who lives by the sea. It stills works (at least, until last year, but my dad says it's ok), but the fork doens't really work much, but that's more because lack of maintenance and sea-water conditions.

It depends how much and how hard you ride. If you ride hard, maybe. I've had a Roadmaster, rode it hard and stripped the one piece crank.
