Alcoholics come in many forms. Some can go weeks without a need to drink, but when they do, it's like a runaway cart. Virtually unstoppable.
Others, need a drink everyday.
Heavy binge drinkers are very likely alcoholics aswell as the 'usual' alcoholic that you see on park benches. Alcohol does not prefer the 'down and out.' It'll take anyone.
Do not listen to the person that says alcoholics need a fix EVERYDAY. That is just not true.

While I am not a doctor, I believe there are many different types of alcoholics. The most common, or maybe just the most well-known, are the ones who need to be drunk at all times. They only feel good when they are drunk. When they start to sober up they go into withdrawal and then need a drink or eight to feel better. Then there are "weekend alcoholics". These people cannot stop at one or two drinks, they do not stop until they throw up and pass out. They might go days or weeks without a drink at all, but then the pattern starts again.

it depends on the person. Some alcoholics have to drink everyday. And some alcoholics can go a day or two without drinking.

Every waking hour, they maybe able to go without through out the day but depending on how dependent they are there are degrees of being alcohol reliant, but nigh on usually a schlurp when no one is looking to keep them topped up throughout the day isn't uncommon.
The most professional people on the planet that you would not believe are alcohol dependent, i knew one very professional person who would buy four bottles enroute home and had a bed in his living room this is where he started and he had somewhere confy after he had slipped into a coma....alcohol isn't fussy who it takes as a victim!
Alcoholism destroys everything!!!

Some of the worst drunks are the ones that only drink once in a while. I drink beer almost every day and have for a long time. If I go a week or so with out one, I do not freak out or get the shakes or anything . So I think people respond differently.

From what I have seen its everyday but I think it depends on what stage of the illness/addiction they are in. Many alcoholics stop drinkin all together when they are 'cured' but it only takes one drink and they could end up back on the sauce, but I know of 2 or 3 alcoholics who had/have a bad drink problem and have taken a few months out and sorted themselves out and now limit themselves to a small amount of alcohol.
AN ALCOHOLIC IS NEVER TOTALLY CURED IT ONLY TAKES ONE DROP!

In terms of biological addiction, they wouldn't be able to go a few days (or even very many hours) without a drink. Withdraw would set in pretty much right away.
But a person can be alcohol dependent without being a medical alcoholic. There are shades of gray. There is also "problem drinking", such as binge drinking, which isn't part of a medical addiction but is still unhealthy.

Even though in the U.S. they tend to think of that condition as one thing, it really isn't. And it isn't always the case that "problem drinkers" inexorably progress to as many drinks as they can get. The British model is much more sensible - and it's making its way to the U.S.
A large group of alcoholics cannot go for many waking HOURS without some drinks. Some will even manifest obvious physical symptoms - and for some of these an unsupervised "cold turkey" regimen can even be deadly. However, even a larger group can go for days without it.
As with a lot of addictions, "getting off it" doesn't seem to be a big deal for a lot of them. However, "staying off it" can be a monumental task.

There's different kinds of alcoholism. There's the ones who have to drink everyday, then there are those who can go months without a drink, but when they do drink, it lasts for up to a week straight, they're known as binge drinkers.
