Holy Spirit/Ghost (same thing), is God's non-human presence on earth.
Example: Your friend is upset about her Grandmother dying, but she is comforted knowing that she's in a better place. That's the Holy Spirit working in her.

The Holy Ghost is also the Holy Spirit. He is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. He is equal to God the Father and God the Son. He is the Sanctifyer. The Holy Spirit gives us 7 gifts. The gifts of wisdom, understanding, piety, fortitude, counsel, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are joy, charity, modesty, chastity, benignity, etc. So we know a person is filled with the Holy Spirit if one is joyful, charitable, modest, good, etc. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit so we must take care of our bodies and dress modestly. The Holy Spirit inspires us to call God our Father. The Holy Spirit teaches us the truths of our faith. He opens our hearts and minds and teaches us what is true and what is false. The Holy Spirit is also God. But there is only one God.

St John 20:22 And when he Had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them.Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holey Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
OK enough quotes from the bible. Also read Acts chapter 2. Regarding the coming of the Holy Spirit. This tell me this is something that came not be seen with our human eyes but it is a spirit that was sent to us after Jesus went back to heaven. This answer may sound pretty simple. This is my understanding of the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Spirit (we don't believe in ghosts) is, of course, one member of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is the Lord and Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father, Who, with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.
This is the definition given by the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 325AD. I can't improve upon it.

When they decided Jesus was divine, that made two Gods: God and the "Son of God." This would not do, because monotheism was in vogue. The constructors of the religion therefore decided to add a third "Person" to create a divine Trinity, "Three-in-One." It was a nod to Platonism, in which Two, the Duality, was vehemently opposed to One, but Three was seen as an "expansion" of One.
This third person was the "Holy Spirit" or "Ghost," usually figured as a Dove - the bird of Venus. But in the Christian legend the Dove has the function of the divine semen, fertilizing Mary via her ear canal at the "Annunciation." This Dove also descends on Jesus at his baptism; it's the inspiring, quickening, consecrating power of God.

Ruach Ha Kodesh- The "Set Apart" "Breath". In some places is referred to as the Spirit of YHVH and in some places as the Spirit of "YAHOSHUA" and in some places as "Their" Spirit. (In the Aramaic the term is Feminine) This is not a "third person". Just as I and my spirit are the same person, so YAHOSHUA and His spirit are the same person. (see Corinthians) (The whole "Trinity" concept is from heathen religions, which we are told to keep away from.)

I believe the Holy Ghost refers to what you may call Spirit. Spirit is the energy or life force behind all creation.

whoooah...you're in for it now!
maybe the toughest question in all of theology. The Holy Spirit - the 3rd member of the Trinity.
Jesus, before he left, said that he would send us a helper to dwell in us and serve as a kind of conscience for believers. That is the Holy Spirit (Ghost).
The Holy Spirit is part of God and has existed for eternity with God. Genesis says that the Holy Spirit moved across the formless and void of life earth to create order and the first life - before humans.
I guess, just like we all have a spirit that's tough to explain...God has a Spirit too.

The Holy Ghost is the dunimos or power of GOD. Jesus is the power of GOD unto man through the Word of GOD.
He is the 3rd person of the Trinity.
He is that through which the power is transferred or conveyed to man.
He is the unctioning of the prophets of GOD and of the Christians.
He is the mind or essence of GOD moving in man, on earth while fully GOD.
