Really, is this what keeps most people in religion?

A lot of times, there are questions asked about whether or not certain things are wrong or are "sins." Examples of such things are making a certain life decision, listening to a certain type of music, watching a certain type of movie, etc. When you investigate why the person asking the question would think that such a thing might be wrong or a sin, you (or I do) find out that what they are really asking is "Will I go to Hell for doing this?" It's not necessarily that they want to be sure they are doing good; they are just worried that they might be angering God, which would cause Him to cast them into eternal damnation when they die. Likewise, when I am doing something that some religious people might deem a "sin" (refer to examples given above), they usually ask me "Would you want to stand before God in judgment and explain why you did that?"

So, to keep this as short as possible, I'll turn this over to the answerers.

I'm a believer, and don't think it makes sense to try to scare people into anything.

My son's obey my Wife and I because they want to please us, not because they are afraid of us. It's the same for me with my faith - I love spending time reading God's word, and in prayer - it's fulfilling and pleases my God.

No, because we all deserve hell because we are sinners. But we have been given a gift of salvation and we can choose to have life eternal with God.

I think that you are probably right. If it weren't for fear, why would people follow all those rules?
