Assuming the private is a Traditional Reservist (1 weekend per month and a regular training period of 2 weeks) and is not activated or deployed:

He/She would probably be promoted through E-3 the first year. Assuming the two-week training period comes toward the end of the year, they would make approximately $750.00 for the two weeks.

Drills are about $195 per month for an E-2 so if we multiply this by 12 months, that comes to $2340.

So, the private makes somewhere in the neighborhood of $4000.00 before taxes.

If the first 5 months are training (Boot Camp/AIT), the private would make about 1400-1500 per month for those 5 months so that could amount to another $6000.00.

He might get a $20K bonus but he won't be getting $4000 a month. As a new soldier his weekend drill pay will be about $200. Its possible that he might be getting a full time job with the Army Reserve (which he should look into if he hasn't already) in which case he could make $4000 a month if he's working full time in pay grade E-6. Can you tell me if he is prior service military? If so he would be entering at a higher pay grade.

The question depends on how many months they are called up for active duty. Do not forget that most reservist are serving on active duty for long stretches of time. Also keep in mind that most reserve people get promoted to corporal or specialist pretty fast. Only the deadbeats stay privates.

Its about 200 a month and for one of the posters responses about not going for money....i served for 4 yrs and 90% of enlisted men are only there for college money and stability. I mean they serve proudly but most enlisted come from middle to lower class families, therefore money is a huge benefit.
