Rates are set up by the company. If you're not on a plan it can cost easily 50 cents per minute or more. If you're on a metered plan it's more like 10 cents per minute. You can also get flat rate plans in which there is no extra charge.

I was on a metered 10 cents a minute interstate and 5 cents a mininute in state and if I talked with a friend 400 miles away for an hour or two my bill would go up from $45 to $85 so when they offered me an unmetered flat rate of $59 a month I went for it.

What's you're paying for is an amortized set of lines and equipment around the US and even the world, including satliltes in orbit. Every phone bill pays part of this. Since there are about 250 million phones in the US that's like 2 billion in payments for all that equipment each month. So, obviously, the actual cost is minimal. The true cost of the automated phone call isn't even 1 cent for a few minutes of talk time.

Man that is such an open question with so many variables. It could range from nothing (ie two cell phones on the same system like Cingular) to $2 a minute using a pay phone and having the operator handle the call.

You need to add a few more details or, better still, pick up the phone you are going to use, dial "0" and ask them.

It sure does depend who your provider for long distance is and how much they charge and what plan you have. Give them a call.
