My cat recently, i have noticed has been chewing off the nail on his front two paws, just the first nail on each foot. I have looked at it when he is sleeping by pushing on his foot to expose the claw. it does not appear to be infected or anything..i just cant think of why he would do this...boredom perhaps??

He could have mites or a fungus in his claws. just like humans get in their fingernails.

I think you just answered your own question of "boredom". My daughter has a dog and when she (the dog) is alone she chews on her leg and makes it sore. It was also said it is done for attention too.

Animals need their nails trimmed or they become uncomfortable. Sometimes they'll rub them on cement to file them down.
