DIRECTV is really a great service. I have it in my home and highly recommend it to everyone. There are alot of channels and programming packages to choose from to suit your needs ot taste.
You sign a one year contract when you get your system installed and you must pay the bill for at least the 1 year. Normally people dont have a problem with that because once they get it they want to keep it instead of going back to regular cable tv, or having nothing to watch. The picture is incredibly clear and you have very little or no signal interruption if the dish is installed and aligned properly. I recommend having this done by a professional.

Here's a hint for you:
If you live in an area with alot of snow and ice - coat your dish with cooking spray. This allows everything to slide off the dish instead of letting it accumulate on there and cause lower signal strength.

If you live in an area with alot of trees and foliage you may not have a clear line of sight for the dish to pick up signal. This is not a problem for most people though. The installers can tell you when they come out if there will be a problem.

I love DIRECTV much better than cable any day. I've had cable and the clarity of the picture for one, is a big difference. Cable is a little fuzzier.
Also, I have had very little problems with the picture if the dish gets snow or ice on it, and in thunderstorms also. The picture usually comes back up within seconds.
I don't see any cons against it, vs cable.

Pros:

1. You get a ton of channels with only the basic package.
2. You can subscribe to the NFL Sunday ticket.
3. The guide is user friendly.
4. You can order PPV, pay your bill, and add services through their website.

Cons:

1. You have to subscribe to the Sports Pack in order to get channels like Fox Soccer Channel and GolTV. These channels are available for free through cable.
2. DirectTV just raised their prices again.
3. You have to be able to install a dish facing the southern sky. In other words, if you live in an apartment, you're pretty much SOL.

Pros:
It's awesome...as long as there is Directv, I'll have it!!!
Clearer picture.
Interactive menu.
Can set favorites so you only have to scroll through channels you like but you can switch back to all channels easily.
Reasonable priced.
Knowledge sales, support and installers.

Cons:
If you get someone who doesn't know what they are doing, doesn't take proper amount of time to set up your system, you may lose your picture frequently due to weather. However, if you'll call Directv they will help you set it straight.

Plus they have Nascar channel. It costs extra for the season but you can ride with each driver and see in car audio and video the whole race.
