Air traffic control comes down to having a good balance of book-smarts and common sense.

As an atc, you must be able to make quick, CORRECT, snap decisions. You must be able to adjust to any unforeseen circumstances that arise like an emergency or a VFR pop-up in the middle of your traffic pattern.

After awhile at your facility the local procedures and airspace become old hand. Working aircraft just becomes a matter of adjusting to each "session" of busy traffic, or scenario.

If you can learn, think, and act quickly, all under pressure, then atc might be something to consider.

a high tolerance of stress would be one good asset as i have heard that Air traffic controllers have the one of the most stressful job in the world. you need to have the ability to concentrate for long periods of time and you need to be able to multi-task as (as was already stated) air traffic controllers have to deal with multiple aircraft at the same time.

Having been up in a traffic control tower and seen how they work.. I would say you need some serious concentration and multi-tasking skills! I really don't know how they do it!?!

It is a very tough job... when I was in training we had to watch controllers at work and it is an incredibly high paced environment. You need to be calm but alert and be able to handle extreme stress... I would say it is definatly in the top 10 most stressful jobs, anyone who thinks otherwise hasnt seen them at work...

I would say that an ATC needs to be extremely disciplined at their job, also being able to multi task as you are sometimes tracking quite a few aircraft. You also need to be totally dedicated to your job, its tough job that is sometimes overlooked in the industry!
Good Luck with your career!
