1- depends on the art

2- depends on the country you live in.

you will be surprised to find that in America, there is a belief by many many teachers, that lifting weakens your technique.

The belief is because it makes you rigid and can make you develop bad habits of fighting against your opponent.

Before anyone pipes up about this bieng limited to a specific art I suggest you look back about 10 years to a certain heavyweight champ who was known for lifting weights as part of his training.

A practice that many BOXING coaches discourage.

Personally, I do lift weights. my "gym" doesn't have any there, the teacher neither encourages nor discourages it.

You should take note that "lifting weights" does not imply that any art doesn't do its own brand of "stregth training" as boxing and other arts and hitting the heavybag or doing certain drills, act as a "stregth training workout" in place of weights.

Personally, I think weights are a good supplement to add on. and as long as you are mindfull of it and pay attention to train properly, I don't think you will develop bad habits. Most times weights will increase your physical stregth quicker than repetitive drills- I think you should do BOTH and supplement your training with weights.

Some gyms offer fighter conditioning & crossfit classes but that's really up to you to take. Figure you're getting cardio work from just MMA training, some circuit training on the side only helps develope strength & speed.

most triditional martial arts they dont lift weight.. they just do a lot of diffrent had teck and legs to.. so like if your punching for a log time (even 15 min non stop) then your arms will hurt!!! but a lot of triditional styles want you to be as light and quick as you can.. and a lot of lifting weight dont targetst the mucles you need to punch hard...
