Here is (a modified version) what I told another lady here on Yahoo answers that asked a similar question:

I would definitely see the Natural History and Air and Space Smithsonian's. But keep in mind the Smithsonian Institute is an entire complex of museums. Lots of people say "The" Smithsonian which gives people the impression that it's only one building. But the National Mall alone holds 10 completely different Smithsonian Museums. And that's not including the Zoo or the Air and Space Annex in Virginia. Take a peak at the website (www.si.edu) before you come and decide which museums you want to see before you come.

I would also see the Cherry Blossoms and the monuments. Consider one of the trolley tours that takes you around the whole city. One of them lets you hop on and off at will.

Get "Washington DC for Dummies" and "Frommers Washington DC" used or at the Library. The both have good tips on how to make the most of your trip, and Frommers goes the extra step by giving tips on things to do for each age group.

I actually used to work at one of the Smithsonians and I heard a lot of people lament how they needed tickets for certain things and couldn't get them or stuff was sold out. Maximize your trip by planning ahead!

I hope you enjoy the city. I've always loved it.

i went this summer and some of the must sees are
the Washington monument
Lincoln monument
make sure don't skip out on the holocaust museum that and the Washington monument were my favorite
a good place to eat that's near all of those walking distance is the old Reagan building it is the old post office look it up it has a food court in it with a lot of different types of food what ever you feel like. if you are going to be in a hotel kind of far from those places i would consider getting a all day subway ticket it takes you everywhere you need to go theres stops at every other block or so
some other places i would consider are the natural history museum, the Smithsonian, ext...
