Hi,

I'm supposed to teach my dog an advanced trick for her training class. The trainer wants everyone to come up with something original....not like rollover, paw, beg, play dead. More along the lines of having the dog bring slippers to you. Anyone have any unique ideas?!??! (i have a jack russell)

How about brining you a tissue when you sneeze?

You can also teach your dog "emotions" and do a little skit where your dog can use them.

A great book full of trick ideas is Dog Tricks for Dummies. That was a great help to me when I started running out of ideas.

I do "bang" with my oldest chihuahua. He sits up (and I sometimes tell him "reach for the sky"). When he's sitting up, I shoot him (say bang). He comes down on 4 paws and spins in a circle before falling over to play dead (though were often joke he plays "rigor mortis" because he doesn't relax LOL). It's is favorite trick.

I taught my dog to talk to me for a treat. He can mumble I love you, and yum-yum. I also taught him to give me his paw, then i'll say give me the other one, and he gives me the opposite paw. Another trick you can do is to hold up your hand with a certain number of fingers up and say how many, once he has barked that many times put your hand down and give him the treat. That one fools people all the time, they think the dog can count when really you've just taught them to bark until you put your hand down ;-).

I taught my dog to turn right and left, not sure if that is advanced enough. I also taught him to smile. I first would push his lips up with my fingers (like he is snarling) and tell him smile. Then I started making the claw with my fingers without pushing up his lips and he did it on his own. Then eventually I just told him to smile and he does. Most people think he's being mean and showing his teeth, it's cute.

My dogs do a move called a 'finish'. As she walks toward me (on a recall), I say "finish' and extend my right arm outward (to the side). Instead of sitting down in front of us, she will go to her left (my right), circle behind me & sit by my left side. We learned this years ago with our first dog in her training classes & it looks really impressive.
