I have been dying my hair for about 10 years now and have pretty much stuck to using Clairol (there are different types i've tried within the brand). I've went from my natural dark brown color to blonde to black to red to other browns. My hair is very healthy and always has been. I prefer using Clairol Hydriance for darker colors. When I dye my hair more reddish, I prefer using Garnier Fructise (I just like the shades of red that this brand has better, but the product is really good too).

An important tip is to ALWAYS buy hair dye that comes with a conditioner to put on your hair after you've taken the dye out. Clairol Hydriance has a tube that you are to continue using once a week for like 6 weeks, which also helps.

To keep it healthy and to keep the color more fresh, ALWAYS buy shampoo AND conditioner (you really should use both and the separates, not shampoo/conditioner combos) that is for colored or perm treated hair (I prefer Herbal Essenses or Bath and Body Works).

FYI-I've gotten my hair dyed at a salon once in my entire hair-dying experience and it was horrible. The color was ok, but the damage was bad. In all the years of dying my hair, I have never had my hair be as damaged as it was after a salon put dye on it.

Dying your hair once its not damaging repeating the process is. If you all ready have dark hair try using a semi permanent last up to 3 washes then its gone.

Yes, at the beauty supply store, there are a couple of dyes that do NOT need to be mixxed with peroxide, so it won't damage your hair like the other stuff does, it won't last as long, but so what, your hair won't be fried:)

Try Clairol Natural Instincts. It is a semi-permanent color that is very easy to apply and washes out in about 30 days (unless you use it on really light hair). I've tried several of their golden brown shades and I love them.

Hi,
Yes, if this is your first time try a semi-permanent color, shades-e-q, by redkin is great and no damage to hair, available in salons only, but not very expensive to do.

All hair dye dmamages hair. It sucks becuase i dye my hair too, but i guess we just haev to get over it. Use the hair dye and then get really good shampoo and conditioner to restore it! Hope this helped!

Clairol Natural Instincts doesn't seem to dry my hair as bad as permanent colors.

none will damage your hair once, it is the repeated times that you will loose your natural oils and then you HAVE to use cream rinses in order to even comb out the tangles.

your best bet is go to a salon, theirs is stronger but they have better applications that you can use with your hair such as creams and such to soften the hair.

off the shelf dyes are much weaker but youhave to watch how you use them.

Semi permanent. My mother used Natural instincts for a long time to cover her white and even though it wasn't permanent it lasted for months.. Hope this helps
