It is actually called a selling race,when the winner is offered for public auction these are ran in UK, but not I dont think in US . Straight after the race race the winner is offered for sale by an auctioneer in the winners circle.
A claiming race is a different thing altogether, the trainer sets the price of the horse to be claimed/bought when entering for the race . The horse can then be claimed for set price during the race, the price tag then determines the weight the horse carries in the race.
Basically a horse that has a low weight was entered in the race with a cheap price tag, if you have a good horse you put him in the race with the top price tag, he will then carry top weight. The trainer with the good horse hopes he is good enough to carry the extra weight, but doesn't want to have the horse sold/claimed for a lesser price. Hope that makes sense I nearly confused myself!

claiming race, and not just the winning horse is offered u can put a claim on any horse in the race for the set price of the ticket (the set price a 10,000 claiming race, a 25,000 dollar claiming race ect). If more than one person bid or put a 'claim' on the horse the tickets are drawn radomdly and the winner of the drawing takes the horse.
