I recently dyed and highlighted my hair, however the highlights aren't as light as I want them to be. They were suppose to be a nice golden blonde, yet the somehow have some orange in them. I was going to bleach my highlights again, but I don't want to fry my hair. Also if I do do them over, How much longer should I leave the bleach in for?

Most colorists will tell you NOT to lighten bleached hair again because of the potential damage, but as someone who has bleached hair professionally for decades, I can tell you that one more bleaching session is not going to kill your hair instantly. The truth of the matter is... your hair is ALREADY fried after one application of bleach. Rather than limiting the degree of lightness that you can achieve, you should focus on a more intense maintenance regiment to keep your chemically treated hair in decent shape.

With that said, you need to know what your hair has gone through before you go ahead with more bleach. If your hair has permanent color (a dye, and not just bleach) in it, you might not be able to bleach it lighter than an orange or yellow. When you colored your hair this last time, did you dye it first and then bleach out the highlights? Sometimes this accounts for the brassiness of the highlighted strands.

If you decide to go ahead with another application of bleach, my advice is the following:

(1) Use foil, and small packets of foil if possible, when bleaching. This will produce lighter results.

(2) Use off-the-scalp bleach with a high volume peroxide (30 or 40 vol). This will also produce quicker and lighter results. (Critics of this technique will tell you that using a high volume peroxide will damage your hair more, but if you leave a milder bleach on for longer, you are still damaging your hair to comparable degrees.)

(3) Don't leave the bleach in for longer than 40 minutes. 30 minutes is ideal. If you are using foil and a fast, strong bleach, you shouldn't need to keep the bleach on for any longer than that.

(4) Finally, please remember to deep condition your hair and use products to maintain your hair. Even after one application of bleach, hair is not hair anymore. People with bleached hair HAVE TO use products to keep the hair looking like hair. Try anti-frizz products, leave-in conditioner, and finishing cream that do not have denat. alcohol in them (this is a drying agent). Anything that has silicone and glyercine compounds tend to work well for bleached hair.

Best of luck!

Spend the extra money and have it done professionally. Your hair dries out more each time and will lose its shine and health if you keep bleaching it.
