A new neighbor of mine recently invited me to her family's Persian New Year party. What exactly is it? How should I dress? What should I bring as a hostess gift?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

It is called Nawrooz. There is no certain dress code, lol. Just be comfortable. I mean, don't wear sweats or something like that. But just casual. Mostly it is a celebration of the new year. They will have a lot of food, Yummy food, they will have a table (hafsin table I think it is called) that will have things like gold fish in a bowl, gold coins, a planted thing of grass. All of these items represent different things. ie:wealth, happiness and so on. It will be a lot of fun, Go and enjoy yourself and experience something new and different! As for a hostess gift, flowers are always good.

Read this brief about Iranian New Year or No-Rooz.

No-Rooz, in word, means "New Day". It is the new day that starts the year, traditionally the exact astronomical beginning of the Spring. Iranians take that as the beginning of the year. This exact second is called "Saal Tahvil". No-Rooz with its' uniquely Iranian characteristics has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrian (This was the religion of ancient Persia before the advent of Islam in 7th century A.D.). ,,,,

You do not need to take any gift, however, they would appreciate if take a Box of Chocolate or Pastry.

Hope it will help.

Whenever I visit Iran people are always bringing flowers and pastries to a gathering or a party or even just when you are dropping by someone's house.
The New Year is like Christmas where gifts are givent o the children so I just want to let you know that if there are going to be children there, like your friend's kids I would bring a small gift, but you don't have to but it would be nice.

They'll be serving white fish and smoked fish with a herb rice (cilantro, dill). So be prepared to eat fish.

i am persian. and i think you will enjoy the party . they will have a spesial table called" haft seen"which means "seven s" because we have seven things which start with S in it . ( coin: sekke , vinegar:serke , grass_plot:sabze,....).
you don't have to take any gift . But it's not a bad idea to take flowers and wear whatever you please.
also they will give you new banknote as gift (eydi).
GO AND ENJOY!!
