You're local feed store should know of people who raise ducks. Shipping eggs, especially in colder weather, reduces the fertility of the eggs. Incubating eggs can be hard the first time. http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/poultry/factsheets/8.html has an article about incubation. However, it would be easier to preorder a duck from your local feed store when it has it's Chick Day.

If you are planning to keep it inside, I would advise against a duck. Being waterfowl, they are extremely messy. I won't go into specifics but, since they drink so much water, it can be a real mess trying to clean their coop. A bantam chicken or, better yet, a button quail are much better inside pets. If you must get an inside duck, call ducks are the smallest variety of duck available. They usually weigh between one and a half to two pounds at adult size. Pekin ducks are bred for meat production and weigh eight to twelve pounds which makes much them messier.

If you plan on keeping the duck outside it should have at least two companions, more if you live in a colder climate. http://www.buildeazy.com/chicken_coop_2.html has a good plan for a chicken coop, which could easily be modified to house ducks.

If you are curious about button quail, I have a youtube video to show how small they are when young http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZjiZ4yHHDs

Hi there. Eggs that hatch successfully need the right constant temperature, humidity and turning usually every 2 hours around the clock.Ducks do not have rectal sphincters so potty training cannot be accomplished. They poop a lot. Many ducks carry salmonella and other diseases and don't show symptoms of the disease. here is an article that might helphttp://www.carolinecrockeroriginals.co.uk/sheldon_pages/handy_hints_for_raising_duckling.htm have fun and be responsible. Use your good judgment to decide what is right for you.
