Jaundice, also referred to as icterus, is the yellow staining of the skin and sclerae (the whites of the eyes) by abnormally high blood levels of the bile pigment, bilirubin. The yellowing extends to other tissues and body fluids and also may turn the urine dark. Yellowing of only the skin also can be caused by eating too many carrots or drinking too much carrot juice.

The bile pigment, bilirubin, comes from red blood cells. When old red blood cells are destroyed by the body (a normal process), the oxygen-carrying molecule within the cells, hemoglobin, is released into the blood. The hemoglobin is rapidly converted to bilirubin in the blood. The bilirubin is removed from the blood by the liver, modified, and excreted into the bile. The bile flows into the intestine so that the bilirubin is eliminated in the stool. (It is bilirubin that gives stool its brown color.) Jaundice can occur whenever this normal process of destruction of red blood cells and elimination of bilirubin is interrupted. This occurs when there is abnormally increased destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), liver disease that reduces the ability of the liver to remove and modify bilirubin, or obstruction to the flow of bile into the intestine.

My daughter had this and our doctor told us to go for walks in the sunlight....eventually this will go away and it did.

Babies who eat a lot of carrots can get yellow or orange skin from substances called carotenoids. These substances from the vegetables, which are chemicals related to Vitamin A, are not toxic, and will not cause any harm. However a few babies who develop yellow or orange skin will have an underlying health problem, especially with the liver, so it is important to have your baby checked

Eating too many carrots, or other foods high in beta-carotene, can cause a condition called carotenemia, ex“High levels of beta-carotene can cause a yellowish discoloration of the skin, most noticeable on the palms and soles. Unlike jaundice, though, carotenemia does not cause yellowing of the whites of the eyes. Carotenemia is usually seen in young children, is not toxic and generally does not cause other health problems. The treatment is a low-carotene diet, but it may take several months for the skin to return to its normal color.

Yes! This happened to my baby, just stopped feeding carrots and squash and the yellow of the skin will go away on its own.

Eating too many carrots will indeed turn you yellow. I turned yellow when i was a baby and my parents flipped out. There is nothing to worry about I turned out to be fine

it is not uncommon for this to happen. beta carotene is a strong colorant, used to be used as a vegetable dye in the clothing manufacture business. Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, all can cause the child's skin to color and the urine as well. Their little kidneys aren't able to filter out all the color yet. So cut back on the carrots, and give alot more water and juice to flush out his little system.

My daughter loved squash and carrots when she was a baby...her little nose would get an orangish/yellow tint to it...but the doctor said not to worry...
However, to this day, family always comments on her "Cheeto nose" !! Poor thing....

Yes. Don't worry. Carrots contain carotene. Oranges do the same effect too. But it is not a health problem.

The best thing to do is to go to the doctor, ask him or her what's if it's OK or no baby to eat many carrots.
