is it correct to say io lavoro a teatro or io lavoro al teatro? can you use both of that?

"lavoro a teatro" means you're working there as an actor/actress, director.
"Lavoro nel teatro" (meaning "nel mondo del teatro", "in the world of playhouse") is the same, but more likable referring to people that work "behind the scenes", like stage or costume designer.
"Lavoro al teatro" means you're working in a specific building (that theater, the one in your town) but not as an artist but as janitor, cleaner, etc
These are the way this sentences are commonly used.

Sorry but there's two different and little meanings.
'Io lavoro a teatro', 'a' means in any theatre or in a theatrical environment.
'Io lavoro al teatro', 'al'=a+il. People waits for you to say which theatre you work in, 'cause the 'il'.

The correct is " Io lavoro al teatro". Cara mia, you cannot use both, as in Italian we do not have definite article "a".
Definite articles used for female gender are " la" and "l' ", as " La tavola" ( the table), la ragazza ( the girl) or " l'amica" ( the friend).
For male gender we use " il", "lo" or " l' ", as in " il sole ( the sun), " lo stadio" ( the stadium), " l'amico".
You can say "Vado a casa" ( I go home)...

Al - if in doubt, stick in a definite article in Italian, as in French!
PS you don't really need the 'io' unless you need to emphasize the 'I', as in 'She works in publishing, but I (underlined) work in theatre.
