I'm AF, but given that the branches pretty much operate the same when it comes to personnel issues I'll give it a shot. First off, don't believe the hype about "If you want to go to the East coast, put all West coast bases on your dream sheet." and other such BS. Bottom line is that if they need folks in your MOS at a specific Post, they'll task you. It all comes down to Military necessity. There is no sadistic person at personnel thinking "This guy wants California., I'll screw him and put him in South Carolina!" followed by a maniacal laugh.
Second, it depends where you want to go and what you want to do. If you wish to be posted at Ft. Campbell KY, then maybe you might look into Air Assault, but if you're interested in Armored MOS's then you can't go there. Same applies to the AF. If I want to go to Luke AFB, then choosing to be a C-130 Crew Chief won't help me get there one bit. Check out generalized MOS's such as MP's, Engineers, and Quartermaster. EVERY base/post/camp needs cops, engineers and someone to order supplies! Look into what specialties are posted in your target area, but even though you may not go there please don't discount all other MOS's! Pick what you're interested in and you may find that although your posting may not be what you wanted, it may make up for it's shortfalls in the end!

Slim unless it is to a post where you will get deployed...Hood, Bragg, Benning, Campbell, Stewart, or Drum...used to be if you said Korea you'd have it the next day...but with the war....
