When ever a typhoon approaches Taiwan or is even in the surrounding area, it will be announced on tv, in the newspapers. In fact the general level of English in Taiwan is good, so you could just ask anyone when you're here and the Taiwanese being as kind as they are will no doubt help you out. On the other hand there are quite a lot of foreigners here who you could also just ask on the street!

Typhoons bring heavy rain and strong winds. An average typhoon lasts a day or two. During this time it's still possible to do things - like go Taipei city Mall (which is underground). go to any one of Taipei's dozens of department stores. During the worst part of the typhoon (can be a good few hours) people tend to stay in doors. If you look out the window and see trees bending and no one on the street - just wait a little bit, read a book, get a hot drink or a cold one and wait a little - within a few hours the heaviest part of the typhoon will be over and you will see people on the streets doing their thing again!

If you find there's going to be a typhoon - do an indoor activity such as shopping in Taipei City Mall (under Taipei Main station), go to the area around 101 - tons of department stores and a 24hr book store with many other stors inside called Eslite book store (the branch near 101).

Don't worry all that much about typhoons - they won't ruin your holiday - and chances are you won't see one anyway.

A Typhoon is a very severe storm and should be taken serious. Winds can be 119 kph and up. With these winds, anything not tied down can and does become a missle. As far a information. You should get a watch 24-48 hours before landfall. And a warning 24 hours before. If you are in a coastal area, you may have to move to higher ground due to storm surge. The surge is the part of the storm that kills most people by drowning them.

A typhoon is the same as a hurricane. You do not want to be outside during a hurricane or a typhoon. Most people try to evacuate from the area rather than face one.

From what I know from my friends in Taipei, it is the same as if a hurrican hit in the U.S. I believe that everyone stays indoors until the storm blows over.
