Taking a dog running is like taking a child running.
You have to work up to it slowly and be aware of and monitor the health of the dog in advance and during.
You should bring water for the dog too. You should check it's paws for cuts, scrapes and becoming red if it is not used to running.
Smaller dogs have a hard time keeping up and big dogs, except some of the long legged varieties, are not made for running long term.
You should also have a leash along and be prepared to deal with cleaning up and mess they make as well as prepared for possible problems with other humans and dogs as a dog fight can put a real dent in your day and kill or injure your dog.
In many areas no leash will get you a big fine and can even cause your dog to be put down by local authorities if it bites someone or gets into a dog fight.
You also don't want it to run off and chase and animals which in many areas is considered legal grounds for it to be shot on sight.
So you have to be aware of the health and safety issues and be sure you can control and car for your dog in a way they deserve.

Sure, as long as you make sure the dog can get a drink as needed and is in good health to go that type of distance. I would start off at a mile and work the way up just to make sure the dog can build it's endurance as well, just like a human.

Yes you can, bear in mind that the dog will not usually run in a straight line exactly like you do, also it may be prone to stopping or changing direction suddenly.
Also if the dog is not use to running with you, then dont attempt the 5-6 miles in one go, build it up gradually like you would if you were first starting off.
Good luck

Depends on the breed smaller dogs walking only because of their shorter limbs they run while you walk. Larger breeds are ok as long as they are healthy but be careful of the breeds with large chests like Great Dane, Boxer etc. It is vet recommended not to run breeds with large chests short 15-20 min. walks 2-3 times a day are just fine. You should have been more specific on which breed(s) you own.

I take my dog running...he's a 25 pound dachshund/terrier mix and he keeps up great. I only run 2-3 miles at a time, though. The worst part of my experience was the time he decided to cut in front of me and got between my legs...i tripped and ripped some flesh off my legs via the concrete.
I don't think I would run with a toy poodle, though.

I guess it all depends on what Breed you have. Some of the Large breeds you need To be careful with running for long periods of time, especially on Pavement due to the amount of stress it can put on their legs, Hips and elbows.
I own a Bullmastiff and she would not like that to much!

I've seen a lot of people running with dogs. The dogs are NEVER running, only the people. The dogs are barely trotting. You'll have to run pretty fast to make your dog run, too.

If it's fit, healthy, if you take water for it, and allow it to stop for toilet breaks it should be fine. An older dog might suffer though. But never make your dog run if it doesn't want to.
