A TSH of 5.7 shows you are hypothyroid (underactive) When I got diagnosed my TSH was 6.8. The normal range for TSH is 0.3 to 3.0, though many doctors feel a TSH over 2.0 is not normal. If you have a TSH doctor, always test first thing in the morning or you will get undermedicated. The TSH was developed to adjust the dosage of Synthoid, so it's not always the best test. It doesn't show if one has low T3 or not and being that Synthoid is a T4 medication a patient that needs T3 would never know this with just a TSH. That's why I always recommend a TSH, Free T4, and Free T3. I'll post a lot of info about lab values and hypothroidism below for you.

In general, thyroid hormone suppression therapy is targeted towards distinct levels of TSH suppression.

Therapy at the greatest extreme aims to suppress TSH to an undetectable level, usually expressed as being less than 0.01 mU/L. Therapy at more moderate levels aims to suppress TSH either to just below the normal range (expressed as 0.1 - 0.5 mU/L) or the lower end of the normal range (expressed as 0.5 - 1.0 mU/L).

I hope this wasn't too technical.

JUST SOME ADDITIONAL INFO:

If your TSH is greater than 2.0, you are clearly at an increased risk of developing hypothyroidism.

The higher your TSH is, the more likely it is you have an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. Your pituitary increases TSH as a way to stimulate your thyroid gland to make enough thyroid hormone. If you have enough thyroid hormone it does not need to secrete a stimulus for the thyroid to make more hormones. So when your TSH levels are low, it usually means your thyroid gland is generally producing enough thyroid hormone. When your TSH levels are high, this usually means your body requires more thyroid hormone.

There are a number of strategies you can implement to help improve your thyroid function. One is to take essential minerals for your thyroid. Thyroid hormone is composed of three or four iodine molecules so you will want to make sure you have a good source of iodine. If you are already taking thyroid hormones it is unnecessary to take any iodine supplements. Two other strategies that help increase the conversion of T4 to T3 would be progesterone and selenium.

One additional option that can be considered is coconut oil. It is important to understand that coconut oil can vary widely in terms of the types of coconuts used, the manufacturing processes used to make the oil, and more.

Because of these variations, my team and I researched coconut oil extensively until we found the ideal source. I now highly recommend and offer you what is clearly the premier brand in the United States: Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil. You should use the coconut oil to cook with or massage the body as it makes a great massage oil.

Keep in mind that thyroid disease can affect almost every aspect of health, so understanding more about your thyroid, and the symptoms that occur when something goes wrong with this small gland, can help you regain your health.

TSH is such a crock. My TSH level is still undetectable. Yet I have been in treatment for over a year, and my T3 and T4 are back in the normal range, and my symptoms are OK.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tinyurl.im/aH6rr Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour. Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland. Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.

If you are hyperthyroid then you need treatment. They can give you radioactive iodine treatment, surgery or thyroid supplements. If you get the radioactive iodine treatment the common side effect is hypothyroid. You will gain weight and will be more on the heavier side for the rest of your life. In time, you will just slowly gain more weight and find it hard to lose the extra weight.
